Les Miserables: Eponine

“Alone pretends to be next to me. There was no one like him anywhere. When I lose my way I close my eyes and he found me.” Les Miserables is one of the longest musical plays and novels in which revolution and some thought about the nature of mercy and justice that people want to receive. This novel presents the history of France and its culture. In France the city of love now, all women are prostitutes and will do anything for money. This review will focus on a girl who is willing to be better for the guy she loves. Are you ready to be redeemed so that they will accept and love who you are?

Thenardier’s daughter, Eponine, who is 16 but has the hoarse, unhealthy voice of an old woman. Since she was a child her parents spoiled her so much because her parents are so blind with money. Emma is a prostitute so she can make money. When she grew up they became poor because Valjean adopted Cosette in exchange for money. They spent all the money and they became penniless so they had to move to a small apartment. She met Marius, a law student who lived near them and left his rich father. When she meets Marius for the first time, she goes straight into his room and asks for money. They grow close and Aponin has fallen in love with Marius, her prince charming. She is willing to be good to be noticed, but her prince saw Cosette and asked if she knew her whereabouts. Although it is very painful for her, she is ready to help him. She leads Marius to Valjean’s house where Cosette lives. She waited after it was said to see how Marius and Kost told their feelings for each other. She saw her father and his henchmen wanting to rob Valjean’s house but she shouts for someone to hear her. She shows courage when her father threatens her. She saw the letter that Cosette had left for Marius, she received it so that she could give it to him. She is willing to save Cosette even though she has good reason to hate her rival, but she is willing to save her because it will make Marius happy. She walks and then the rain falls as if the sky knows how she feels and then she sings her feelings. Martyr? Maybe. Before she could hand him the letter she took a bullet for him. She uses her last breath and last words to tell him how she always felt about him saying “You know, Monsieur Marius, I think I was a little in love with you.” What is different about Eponin that makes her keep a tiny good, when her parents are literally the scum of the earth?

Eponin symbolizes redemption, great patriotism and rain. She changed because she was willing to be better so that Marius would notice her. She will give everything for her loved ones even though she will get nothing in return. She is like the rain even the sky is falling and she may feel hopeless and sad that there is always a rainbow after the storm, there is another day and more hope. She is one of the most tragic and heroic characters in the novel.

The movie Les Miserables deserves applause. It is very inspiring but some parts are tragic. It also shows many features that people can mirror. It conveys the message that anyone can change for the better as long as they are ready and love conquers all. The novel brought to Broadway is indeed a good choice. It would go on to win several awards because the artist did justice to the characters. It spans decades as parole violator Jean Valjean takes a young girl named Cosette under his protection, and remains on the run all the time from Javert; All as the French Revolution would take place. The production, designs, costumes and the film itself are handled brilliantly. The audience felt like they were back in France but still felt like they were watching a musical on stage. The actors own their scenes like when Aponin sang “By Myself”. Overall the movie is an outstanding movie and they conveyed the message to the audience. We all feel the emotions from the movie and every scene is worth watching. However they should give a little more scene for Eponine because her story is about youth, performances and marriage. They also include symbolism like the yellow card when Valjean finally gets out of prison, they gave him a yellow card which is a ticket to freedom but it’s more like a ticket to a miserable life because the card symbolizes social rejection. The silver candlesticks symbolize the goodness and desire of Bishop Miriel to help poor people. Cosette’s doll symbolizes a transformation or change that is about to happen in her life, when Valjean first visited her he gave her an expensive doll. It was a great movie and novel kudos to the artist, writer, director and all the people who made Les Mirerables.
