Michael Cole – Pete Cochran From Mod Squad

This interview was done in the early 1990s. It was my wildest dream, a dream come true, even as a professional reporter.

Dark curly hair. Eyes grow. gravel sound

Women over thirty will probably remember introvert Pete Cochran of the early 1970s ABC series MOD SQUAD. Michael Cole, the actor who played Pete, is much different spiritually today than he was then.

However, in terms of appearance, one significant point is equally clear. Inside SQUAD MODIn a five-year run, Michael had a serious car accident. His eyelid was almost detached from his face; The surgery saved it but a clear scar remained. Girls across America sighed in relief and dreamed anew of his confused face.

Today, the face is even more seasoned; medium build, swinging between middle age and toned; The dark hair – streaked with gray – is still curly. The voice does not change. he wears glasses

Those teenagers who once dreamed and sighed about him are now adults whose lives no longer focus on Michael Cole’s fantasy, and he has long been aware of this.

“I got into trouble [afterward]”, he admitted. “It was unreal to have nothing, and then say, ‘I want this house,’ and he could buy it.” The squint in his eye became clearer as it entered his thoughts. But now, words opened on deeper scars, Invisible to the eye but clear to the ear. “Everything bad was my fault. I don’t blame anyone else.

“I started in acting school working in plays. The stage was my bedroom.” He laughed, and his eyes lit up as he went into a long work about how he literally lived on stage for many years. “Then I went to Las Vegas. I met Paula there.” Paula Kelly was once a member of The Modernaires, a talented singer, and the woman who became Mrs. Michael Cole.

“She was beautiful. I was shy.” His smile was upside down; His squint deepened. He looks like a big boy. The mention of Paula, the woman he married, the mother of his adored daughter, brought tenderness to his voice and brightened his face.

His ideas moved so fast. Afterwards, he discussed his stardom. “SQUAD MOD was a trailblazer. There were always mailbags in the hall outside Aaron Spelling’s office.” He leaned over the desk to look at his hands. His fingers and thumbs formed a triangle, the rest spread evenly—a movement of thought. “It was life-changing. I remember a letter from a girl about drugs, she was a whore. Because of our show she became a social worker.” So many years later, the thought still stirred emotions in him.

A faceless boy helped for a better life by Michael Cole, at that time a young man who had everything. And yet he was ready for self-destruction. What followed were years of anger, confusion, heavy drinking and pointless indulgence. How is it that he now has a spacious house on top of a hill? Talks often and liberally about spirituality and the meaning of Messiah in his life?

the accident. He found God in his car accident. “It was in a smooth spot on the Laurel Canyon Freeway; we [he and Paula] hit the mountain I went through the window twice.” It reminded him of the moments immediately afterward, rushing to the hospital. “People were coming in and out of my room.”

He examined his fingers, scattered again. “After everyone left one night, I checked the mirror and knew it might be over.” He looked up with a slow smile. “And then I did it,” he showed as he covered his eye with one hand. “I thought it might be an interesting picture.” He probably wasn’t so philosophical about losing an eye and his career. After the eye was saved, after SQUAD MOD, he debated, was a guest on episodic television and presented plays across the country. He told about one experience.

“We were in a small town at a certain time. The weather was bad, we didn’t know if we would have an audience. But three old women were there, one who was celebrating her 80th birthday.” He ran an index finger up the side of his nose, then readjusted his glasses. “During intermission, I invited a stage actress to receive a dozen red roses. After the show, we had a party.” He stopped talking and took a deep breath. His next words were thick. “We both cried. It’s still a special memory.”

How can a person who cries at a stranger’s party become a hard drinker and rowdy? “I was scared. I remember waking up in the middle of the night. Something real grabbed me. Paula held me and it was gone.” Despite the love, Paula could only handle so much amid such strong emotions, and she eventually left him.

“She didn’t do anything wrong,” he hastened to assure, “it was me. She just couldn’t take it anymore.”

Then came a long period when he did nothing. “Absolutely nothing. People started dying around me… my manager, my mother. Other people were worried, told me to go back to work, but it wasn’t time. I knew when it would be time.”

Michael reads avidly, quoting Dylan Thomas, the Bible, and other writings that have influenced him. He dropped out of school in the 10th grade, eventually returning but never finishing college; yet he can speak with a scholar’s insight. For Someone who has done nothing for so long, his thoughts and words speak of a healthy spiritual life.

It has been many years since any of the mentioned milestones occurred in Michael Cole’s life. Despite everything that tried to knock him down and pull him to despair, today he has peace of mind, a spiritual understanding of his life and friendship with his ex-wife.

He showed me a sketch he had done on his wall, a cross with a humanistic flower object draped over it like Jesus hung on the cross. Alongside his sketch, he wrote, “This time, Dad, they know what they’re doing.”

“Yes,” he smiled when our interview ended, “everything is in God’s time, not ours. God gave me a gift, I wasted it for a while, but not anymore. I’m ready to start using it again.”

Author’s Note: This was one of my favorite interviews of all. Michael picked me up at a 7-Eleven at the foot of the long, winding road that led up to his beautiful, large home in the California foothills. He put me in the dark green, very expensive car, and as I closed the door it pulled away from me and slammed.

“Hey!” he called as he walked in beside him. “Do not Do It!”

I apologized and explained that it was not done on purpose. He was obviously very careful with his vehicle.

We arrived at his house, and he led me into the house, where we sat together at his dining table. He got me a diet soda, and then we talked. and spoke and spoke It was like a dam burst.

Remember, this was a dream come true for me. Michael Cole was the perfect guy of my young childhood – and here I was as an adult, at his dinner table, in his house, chatting with him as if we were old friends. Stunning!

When we finally finished talking, he allowed me to take his picture in front of his painting on his wall.

But the most amazing part, really, beyond anything else… the interview was over, the photos were done – Michael Cole, the Michael Cole, wanted to cook me dinner. Yes, he wanted me to have dinner with him – and he was going to be the chef. Spaghetti, actually. I thanked him for the offer, and for reasons I’ll never understand…I said, “No, thanks.”
