Why Do People Hate?
As a writer and Holocaust researcher, I appreciate a thorough examination of morality. Repulsion, despair and darkness exist within human nature. The victims of the Holocaust faced the most treacherous forces; Deception, cruelty, brutality, disease, starvation and death of loved ones were the daily companions of the concentration camp inmates. How did so many people go along with this terrible plan? How can millions more turn their backs on the immorality of destroying an entire religious group? Therefore we learn nothing about ourselves if we do not examine this part of our psyche.
It is safe to say that large parts of the European population at the beginning of the 20th century did not like Jews. Pogroms were everywhere and were largely ignored by society, the police and the armed forces. In fact, in some of the pogroms against Jews, homosexuals, mentally ill and gypsies, the police and the armed forces collaborated (Einsatzgruppen, Cossacks, etc.). Jews were significantly mistrusted, disliked and ostracized. They were the butt of jokes and the subject of innuendo. The Jews did not represent any threat of a reasonable nature or definition to the Europeans. The Jews were about 2% of the population in Europe; They held a small percentage of the money, did not influence governments and had no armed forces or militia. They could not pose a threat to any potion of Gentile Europe if they wanted to. So why did so many Europeans hate Jews? How is it that so many people find it easy to hate millions they know nothing about and have never met? Were they automatons, eagerly imitating a propaganda stunt offered by the Nazis? Or, were they intelligent human beings, capable of understanding the nuances of their society’s actions and still coming to the conclusion that the Jews were bad people who deserved to be rounded up, imprisoned and exterminated?
We are complex creatures. I believe we have much more than the battlefield of good versus evil everywhere. Most of us are not one or the other, but both. We are beautiful and ugly, soothing and terrifying, cruel and caring; We love and we loathe. Unlike animals, humans are governed by moral principles and beliefs. We are not motivated by moral illusions, insofar as they are controlled by them. So what brings a person to despise a stranger? Why do some people hate and fear those who are different in color, religion or ethnicity? Why is it easier for so many people to hate than to tolerate?
My instinct tells me that some people acquire racism because they were taught to hate at a young age, by parents, siblings, relatives, friends or any other part of their social network. At some point in their young existence, they learned to hate people close to them. And many of them continue to hate without questioning the truth of their abhorrence. Being recognized as a bigot makes some people popular among desirable social groups. Research shows that a high percentage of racists are poorly educated. However, not all racists are ignorant or mentally retarded. Some people with a master’s degree fill themselves with expressions of hatred towards minority groups. The dark side is full of ignorance and deception. And while many people are taught to be jealous in childhood, some acquire it later in life, despite having a tolerant social network in their youth.
Could we be little different from the last remnants of our ancestors? Like many animals, humans originally had to fight and dominate others to maintain territorial supremacy. Perhaps the need to be superior is an innate mental mechanism, acquired biologically. This suggests that Darwinism may be a factor, although it may not be possible to prove it. Evolution teaches us that we are governed by the principle of survival of the fittest. Is human behavior governed by an innate fear of others? Are social responsibility, tolerance and compassion simply an abnormal acquired social behavior, often practiced by liberals and religious people? Are the better angels of our conscience nothing more than strange adaptations to our dark, natural survival instinct?
I believe it’s easier for people to hate because tolerance takes effort. Haters live with haters, in a community of wickedness. The more they hate, the more happy they are by their social group. Tolerance will brand the hater as an enemy – the enemy is anyone who is different. It’s an endless vicious circle, guaranteed to produce jealous offspring. Thus, we hate to be recognized as appropriate by our peers.
But, we can break the bonds of bigotry one person at a time, with education, conversation and engagement in all media. We can use social media and internet websites to our advantage. We can combat the innate fear of others by creating compassion for the person, regardless of the environment. We can promote the value of each person as a unique being, with unlimited potential, instead of as a member of a religious or social class, with preconceived expectations. This is tolerance of the individual soul. Only when we make an effort to understand and appreciate the differences between us, racism and bigotry will end. Only when we accept the value of every person, regardless of background, will our culture grow to be meaningful and rewarding.
Fear may be at the heart of racism and bigotry. We fear what we do not understand. We fear anyone who might be perceived as better than us. That is why we use tools of bigotry to become superior to others. Our fear pushes us to prove that we are better than the “others”. It feels good to be on top. However, in order for one person to feel superior, another must be subjugated. To feel better, we have to control someone. The easiest way to control is to hate those who are not a threat. And it feels good to make them live in fear. We rationalize our fear minimization by imposing greater fear on the victim. If they are inferior, we must be better. We climb over their social corpse to feel superior.
Racism, hatred, intolerance and bigotry are the objects of fear. Remove the fear and you will no longer need to use the tool of jealousy. This is our challenge. We must convince the haters that they have no reason to fear minorities. This is the greatest and noblest challenge of our generation. The reward for success is tolerance, respect and mutual recognition. We can share our planet together as equals. This will be our legacy.
But, if we fail, our children will inherit a world ruled by the dark angels of our nature. If we fail, our descendants will be condemned to a life surrounded by fear, suspicion, hatred and death. We cannot end our generation with the same values as our European ancestors of the early 20th century. We can and must be better than this. We must develop into a tolerant society. The future of our children depends on it.
