Les Miserables: A Film Review

“Among the lower classes there is always more misery than there is humanity in the higher.” A 19th century French historical novel that ignites people’s emotions and feelings, Les Miserables, written by Victor Hugo, a poet novelist and playwright of the Romantic movement. This eye-opening work shows the state of affairs between the rich and the poor, how powerful the government is and how weak the common people are. This gives viewers a harrowing experience about the history of France as it was written by a famous writer and adapted into a film directed by Tom Hooper in 2012. Therefore, this review will focus more on the power imbalance between the government and the common people.

Prisoner 24601. After spending nineteen years in prison and the galleys for stealing a loaf of bread and making several attempts to escape from the bars, Javert is finally released by Javert, the officer in charge. When he arrives in the city of Digne, he is repeatedly rejected when he asks for shelter and employment. This is mainly because he carries a yellow card with him which makes it known that he is an ex-convict and is therefore discriminated against and looked down upon. Grieving, he calls Monsignor Miriel, Bishop of Digne, who shows him kindness and hospitality. However, he repays the bishop by stealing his silverware. Then the police arrest him, but the bishop covers him with a pious lie, claiming that the silverware is a gift. In return, Miriel makes Valjean promise to become an honest man. As he strives to fulfill his obligation, over time, he masks his identity with a new name, Monseigneur Madeleine and manages his own factory, becoming the mayor of the town. But his past still haunts him. Valjean and Javert, the law and the ex-convict meet. Once again, his life of desperation continues as he continues to run from the law as he promptly violated his parole. He meets Fantina, who is his employee and later becomes a prostitute. Wealthy people mistreat her and so Valjean saves him from despair with his generous heart. However, Fantine dies in his arms with her dying wish: to find her daughter Cosette. Having honored Fantine’s wish, he found Cosette living horribly with her evil guardians. He adopts her and becomes Cosette’s foster parent. Since then, they lived together from place to place, running and running away from Javert. As the years pass, Cosette transforms into a lady who questions Valjean about his identity and eventually meets Marius who has fallen and declared his love for her, and she returns her love. However, with the attack on the French regiment, Marius is one of the revolutionaries who will revolt. Except for Marius, who was saved from death by Valjean, all the revolutionaries lost their lives at the hands of the regiment, including Gavroche, a brave young revolutionary. After the rebellion, before the wedding of Marius and Cosette, Valjean reveals his past to the young man and eventually becomes estranged from Cosette and Marius. Aware that Valjean saved his life from the grave, Marius, along with his lover, finds Valjean who later reveals his true identity by giving Cosette a letter with all his confessions as he peacefully dies.

The most obvious theme that Hugo condemned and presented in the film is probably the huge gap between the rich and the poor or, in a general sense, the outcasts because of which they either remain in their condition or only get worse. While the upper class, with its power and wealth, continues to place itself in a higher place, it is able to manipulate and command those below it. This reveals how innocent people are turned into beggars and criminals. Meanwhile, Valjean is an obvious victim of this class system as seen in the film as a yellow card that gives him freedom, but on the other hand a card that gives him even more misery. This symbolizes social rejection and shows how terribly society treats outcasts. This prohibits him from a peaceful life, especially when no one would dare to talk to the ex-convict. He would knock on every door if, unfortunately, his attempt at employment and shelter was always stifled. Javert shows how ruthless the law was in France at that time. Jean Valjean’s life is thrown into despair by the theft of a loaf of bread. Although he is free, he is still in the hands of the government as he continues to run from Javert who is trying to arrest him for violating his parole. Les Miserables in the translation of “The Miser” leads viewers to think that the film probably revolves around these men, women and children of France of that time that could barely overcome the misery of everyday life and the hardships of every breath. The film also showed how these people are treated inhumanely, denying them access to food, shelter, education, human rights that include the equality of class systems and those represented by Fantine’s suffering; the low treatment of women and the objectifying approach used for them. Fantine symbolizes the impoverished women who have been driven to despair and death by a horrible society. Fantine’s daughter, Cosette, although she ended up having a prosperous life, once suffered the consequences of an unjust society with Gavrochet, a young man who bravely joined the rebellion symbolizing the youth, both of whom had little or no access to food, shelter, education, and a solid family on that you can rely on. Even though they were young when faced with all this, they had no choice but to compromise. Gavroche is one of the dead bodies that can be seen after the revolution as he was killed by the regiment. This shows how ruthless the government is regardless of age. Another scene that shows how cruel the life of an outcast is to live for the rest of his life and that in such cases he needs to distance himself from his loved ones is that Jean Valjean distanced himself from Marius and Cosette after the rebellion because he is an ex-convict. He dies peacefully from the satisfaction of seeing Cosette’s face for the last time. His whole life is misery, his whole life as a prisoner 24601. They gave him a number and killed Valžan.

Les Miserables is a movie that is highly recommended for all ages. This exposes the history of France as well as the problems of society at the time. Viewers can easily recognize the symbolism. The film evokes the passion and sentiment of the viewer by bringing them an experience through the scenes. The sound effects make the movie even scarier, the songs are well arranged and besides, the actors are very consistent in their roles that the audience feels the atmosphere as if they are in the real scenes. Hugo praises the unjust class structure of the nineteenth century, which is clearly seen in the film. All in all, Les Miserables is a film and novel not to be missed.
