Can Nollywood Clinch the Number One Spot in Moviedom?

What was the answer that came to your mind when you read the title of this piece? was it in keeping with the aforementioned negative repetitive responses against progression or was it a deep sigh embedded in a few minutes of quiet thoughtful projection into the future. You have traveled through time and space, seen the possibility of dealing with the odds that stood in the face of Industry advancements and injecting large doses of a fun, tested and proven multi-progression vitamin formula discovered from the products of years of Industry research, then you declare that it is possible !.

Whichever school of thought you choose, the truth still remains that Nollywood certainly has a lot to catch up on in terms of “quality” rather than quantity productions. Does Nollywood dream of rising above the rest, putting Africa at the forefront of film production in the world? However, it is vital, imperative, to understand why Hollywood and Bollywood have a huge advantage over Nollywood.

It is recorded that the first feature film under the Hollywood frame was made in 1914 titled “Squaw Man”, ironically, a significant year in the annals of our historical sojourn when Lord Lugard merged the northern and southern protectorates to give birth to the great nation “Nigeria”.

Over the years, Hollywood has morphed into a multi-billion dollar industry that has emerged largely from well-defined “functional” structures on the ground. The genres of films on offer have blossomed from the usual stereotypical classes to an infusion of more liberal ones such as action, comedy, romance, thriller, science fiction, violence, adventure, crime, suspense, drama, family, musical, horror, fantasy, animation, mystery, film noir. There is certainly something for everyone, even children can indulge in the beautifully scripted and well-executed animated films, bringing to life the many fairy tales that were once related on the pages of storybooks. Talking animals in movies, a product of creativity, e.g. Cats and Dogs, Racetracks, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, provided viewers with an unforgettable viewing experience.

The big players in the Industry own the studios with the “backyard” where the films are also made and use the synergies arising from their ownership of certain print and broadcast media to consolidate their financial gains. Theatrical releases are considered sacred and appropriate, first en route to a box office hit with constant trailers airing regularly before opening, with over 30,000 screens owned by operating theater chains spread across the US. Moviegoers eager to see blockbusters flock to theaters to quench their cinematic thirst. The action translates into millions of dollars for filmmakers, and also thanks to a well-structured film distribution system that provides legally free access to these films.

Films are also seen on other continents, distributed to English-speaking countries, dubbed by actors from non-English-speaking countries or simply subtitled. Access to these films for home viewing pleasure, months after the theatrical experience, comes through DVD purchases, DVD rentals, and legal broadcasts of the film on TV stations. Low-budget films are not left out of the picture as DVDs are released directly to the public after production. The financial backing for making big-budget films comes from banks, companies and wealthy investors who rely heavily on the experience of the producers, directors and cast, especially the popularity of those charged with taking on leading roles.

Maybe what Hollywood wants for it is a mix of spicy advanced technology with a well-crafted story, a great cast that results in quality A-rated movies. Modern and powerful use of “CGI” (Computer Generated Image to create unimaginable superior special effects), visual effects, lovely cinematography, amazing stunts and scenes, use of 3D technology, clear audio without sound interference and high output quality are certainly far ahead of the pack. The top-rated actors are highly paid and smile to the banks with millions of dollars. The presence of various well-structured organizations in the field, such as Writers Guild of America, Motion Picture Editors Guild, Motion Picture Producers and Motion Picture Distributors of America, Motion Picture Sound Editors, Motion Picture Photographers Association, National Theater Owners Organization, Cinema Editors of America, Cinematographers Association of America, the casting society, the Directors Guild of America, the Producers Guild of America, aided their dominance and fostered unity among members of the same team.

It can take months, or even years, to properly plan, source funding, and get all stages of film production from pre-production to post-production right, especially with the looming consequences of a failed production. Hollywood does not make movies in twelve days or less like their Nollywood counterpart.

The first film in India was shown on July 7, 1896, but its industry was born on May 3, 1913 with “Raji Harischandra”, a silent feature film by Dadasaheb Phalke. Alam Ara broke silent film in 1931 and with legends like Dharmendra Singh Deol, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini and a host of fine actors including Jeetendra, the 60s-80s witnessed reigning hits like Sholai, Amar Akbar Anthony , Johnny Mera Naam, Seta Aur Geeta, The Burning Train, Bobbi, Kabhi Kabhi, Dharamveer, among others. They are currently working in the shadows of Hollywood in Nigeria.

The popularity of Bollywood continued to grow, opening a new market and doors of opportunity for it, which translated into better productions that caused a break from the usual stereotyped stories of marriage norms and boasted good cinematography. In addition, the opening of more theaters in their country made it possible to record box office hits. A blend of western dance styles with technological beats is incorporated into their dance and millions of dollars (not rupees) are spent on making big budget films from major studios and private distributors.

The realization and aspiration to be on par with their Hollywood counterpart in terms of special effects led to the hiring of experts in the required field from the US to realize them, which helped open up a wider range of film genres to be made. Filming in other parts of the world such as Europe and other areas seems to be the norm that is making waves among filmmakers there, especially when it comes to successful blockbusters made from filming in that area.

The story of Nollywood is not unknown to the Nigerian people, having emerged in 1992 with the acclaimed movie “Living in Bondage”. However, it should not be forgotten that Nigerian films shot on celluloid existed even before this period. In one of my articles titled ‘Nollywood: Origins and Unresolved Issues’, I painstakingly detailed how the Nigerian film industry evolved from the colonial era, through the ‘golden years’ to the Nollywood era and the many problems plaguing the industry.

Financial and distribution problems, recycling of old faces, plot twists, simulacrums of Hollywood films, low audio and visual production quality, trite storylines, high rates of predictability, ear-splitting soundtracks, narrow genre of films to choose from, and a conspicuous absence of big special and visual effects, piracy, are some of the problems that the Industry is struggling to overcome.

Much needs to be done to restore the confidence of Nigerians in the industry. We could go on and on, moaning and complaining about the shortcomings, the inadequacies facing the industry, even as stakeholders and friends of Nollywood have time and again offered solutions. It remains an open question whether practical steps have been taken to implement well thought out strategies that would remedy the problems, fill the gaps and set Nollywood on the right path to Glory?

Nollywood still maintains a large percentage of its shibboleth ideologies and has sailed the high seas for too long, constantly attacked by relentless pirates every now and then. It is time for the Industry to put its house in order, discard the prosaic films and change its course skillfully guided by the compass of cutting edge technology. There are new heights to reach, so Nollywood where do you stand?
