Profile of Women Leaders

Leadership is based on two words, “pressure and support” and that leadership is the power to influence people to move in a direction that you believe in your heart is a good direction for most people” (Fennell, 1999, p. 267). Adams and Wieder noted that “evidence from contemporary research on gender roles and leadership indicate that men and women, with similar education, career aspirations, and training, score essentially the same on measures of psychological masculinity and femininity.” In other words, traits we assume are important in good leadership can be found in people of both sexes.

What makes a leader is a complex question. It includes factors from the environment in which a person grows up, his family situation and his personality traits. . The following discussion is a summary of my observations plus some of the conclusions of others

According to an overview of research conducted by me, women are a rapidly growing segment of the business community worldwide. The leadership characteristics required to succeed in this new reality are very much “female characteristics”. These features include:

1) Self-confidence, independent thinking and willingness to take risks

2) Ability to balance work and family (most of them are married)

3) Self-confidence, independent thinking and willingness to take risks

4) About 40 to 60 years old

5) Has a good education with high skills in management and entrepreneurship

6) Personal and professional combination

7) Intuition

8) Social skills

9) Direction

10) Hires competent and reliable people (loyalty is not a priority)

11) See communication and conflict resolution as key to organizational success

12) Men and women tend to lead in different ways. That is, the women’s leadership strategy is based on a family pattern. it means that

Women tend to look at problem solving differently than men. Women tend to be more holistic in their thinking.

13) Leaders must be aware of what is perceived by others and develop proactive strategies in building success. Marcano (1997) described this as “know thyself” and added that it is important to be honest and objective when assessing your strengths and abilities, as well as your goals.

14) Continuous professional growth

15) Leaders need to have a clear sense of their vision and beliefs

Research – Case study of Serbia

I presented the latest results of research related to women leaders and their position in the business world, i.e. how people look (divided by gender, age and education level) women leaders and if they trust them. My scientific task was to draw some conclusions and point out some special characteristics of the region of Serbia and the Balkans. We can see different opinions related to our questions:

Do you trust women-leaders? Can they be as successful in the business world as men?

o Methodology

o Interviews conducted with 1,476 people, 726 women and 750 men

o The interviewees were 18 to 60 years old

o In all buildings, 30% of the respondents were owners

o 73% were married, 19% single and 8% divorced.

o Some key findings are detailed below:

o The barriers to promoting women in business are remarkably similar in the Balkan region and the major cities in Serbia – Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nice.

o The women respondents trust women leaders (63%) and most of them prefer to work in some office where there is a leader or manager. Also, they think that women want to reach the top, and are just as ambitious as men.

o The majority of respondents (60%) say that organizational culture is the most significant obstacle for women to obtain senior management positions, while only twenty-nine percent (29%) think that a balance between work and family is a significant obstacle to promotion and 36% believe that a lack of self-promotion hinders women from reaching the highest level positions

o Most of the men in the study had a negative attitude against female managers. In other words, they expressed stereotypes and preconceived notions about the roles and abilities of women in business. Men emphasize that women have a general lack of management experience, a lack of skills and knowledge, and a lack of role models.

The male respondents almost gave the similar answers related to our questions as follows:

1. We are here in the Balkans and we are debating the traditional model of society

2. Women fight for equal rights almost all the time and now that they have, they expect special treatment because they are women

3. I don’t trust women in business and I don’t take them seriously

4. I am afraid of these women

5. I hate feminist community and culture

6. Women must stay at home and be leaders in their families but not in a business sense. The role of leader in business is reserved for men

7. Female leaders are actually men dressed as women

It is very interesting that a large amount of men do not differentiate between women leaders and feminist women, who are not very popular in this area. And about 20% of the respondents in the study share the mentioned opinion with the men.

About 10% of the male respondents fear the control of women in the business world, because it can change the natural balance between women and men and reduce the traditional role of men in society and in the family. Therefore, they would not want to dominate business women in the 21st century.

This also strongly indicates that among young women (18-35) there is a great interest in leadership and entrepreneurship, and they are more than before checking out opportunities to reach their professional goals. That is, they expressed their opinion in the following words:

1. Female owners and leaders have more of a struggle because they are females and no one will take them seriously so they have to push and introduce themselves to the world and allow the world to see their abilities while male owners don’t have to worry about the struggle to fit in and try to live and work according to society’s standards, because Being men they already have the macho-masculine figure and the alter ego that men have.

2. Women have to fight harder and be stronger if they want to live and work in a man’s world you have to embrace the environment don’t expect a man to be a gentleman and hold the door open for you, don’t expect him to do anything unusual that a man would do for a woman because in a way you One should be treated like one’s colleagues and not expect otherwise. In order to fit in with the men you have to in a way think, work and behave like them i.e. don’t think they will treat you like the female you are. You have to be strong not every man you meet will treat you like that but to show your strengths you should expect it.

3. It is very clear that women have come a long way as successful professionals. Life in the workplace became much more diverse as an increasing number of women made their presence felt in many industries and professions. The female workforce has expanded exponentially, so it has critical importance in the professional world. Like it or not, men need to accept, once and for all, that women are marching up the corporate ladder confidently and full speed ahead.

4. In the past women were much more “quiet and passive” in the workplace because of the relatively small number of workers compared to men. Women today, however, have begun to take their positions by using all their God-given powers of intelligence and organization. Warren Farrell, author of Why Men Are the Way They Are, explains that men envy the “power of beauty” that allows women to have certain things based on their physical assets. Maybe it’s less that women use their beauty, and more likely that men judge them based on their physical beauty

5. The reasons people open and lead businesses among women is to bring and focus on a clientele of mainly women. Most of the times women open businesses that deal with products that women use, such as clothes, makeup and home products. The most successful companies run by women are those that use the special skills of women. These special skills are style, fiscal sense and public relations. Their strengths as business owners are their public relations and the clientele they bring. The weakness as business owners is overcoming the sexism that exists. The biggest fear is finding a clientele that will do business with a woman.. I think these men feel this way because they are insecure.

6. I just think women just got even smarter. Speaking from a personal point of view, I know that being happy and successful is very important to me. They go hand in hand. Most women I know feel this way. I believe that as women progress, they will be involved in an even larger part of the economy, because young girls are going to follow their female role models.

7. Personally I feel that some highly skilled positions are better suited for women because men have huge ego problems

8. I personally think that women can do everything that men do sometimes better. There has always been a glass ceiling for women in the workforce, however, many women are approaching this ceiling and some have at least tried to break through this ceiling. The reason many people think that women are not capable of being in the workforce is because of the connotation that has always been there, “women should stay at home and take care of the home”.

9. We need to stop complaining about how much work we have or how hard it is and just get it done. The more we complain about work, the more the man will say that things should go the way they used to be, that is, the man works and when he comes home he is treated as if he were something golden. And especially during teleligno we are worthless. The woman cannot go to work because she has to stay at home with the children and cook and clean the house. I’m glad I live in this century because honestly I don’t know how I would have been able to live up to those expectations

Finally we can conclude that the woman is now much more motivated and ready to reach their professional dreams and be a leader, not only in Serbia and the Balkan region, but in the whole world, back then. Until recently, entrepreneurship was considered by many to be the last bastion of male dominance in the business world. This is no longer true. More businesses are now started by women than by men. However, there are still many men who do not think women should be in these positions and do not respect them at all. As time goes on, women are going to be a bigger and bigger part of the business world, and these men are just going to have to accept it and deal with a reality check, because no matter what they feel and how much they are against it, the world is changing and it’s going to happen regardless of how they feel.
