The 10 Most Romantic Couples in History

Reams have been written about it; She made the most extraordinary alliances and triumphed over all odds. Like a rampaging elephant (not a very romantic image but you get the picture), he didn’t bother to see who was hiding in his path, and just completely consumed the people involved. Yes, we are talking about this thing called love. Over the decades, Cupid’s arrows sometimes made two people fall so deeply, passionately and hopelessly in love that society and its dictates simply fell by the wayside. And we devoured their immortal love stories, secretly jealous of those couples who found their matching halves or soul mates. and feel encouraged to find our prince or princess.

here 10 of the most romantic couples of all time in the history of mankind.

1. Romeo and Juliet. Arguably the most famous couple of lovers of all time, this is one love story by William Shakespeare that inspired a generation of lovers, and continues to do so to this day. Rome and Julia are the ultimate synonyms for true, eternal love, and also for love’s greatest sacrifice – one’s own life.

2. Pyramus and Thisbe. Written by the Roman poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses, this is a tragic love story that probably set the tone for William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet several centuries later. In this story, two young lovers are neighbors from home, but cannot meet openly because of their warring families. They used to meet secretly and one day agreed to have a meeting under the mulberry tree. Through a series of unfortunate incidents and huge misunderstandings, both Periramus and Thisbe die within minutes of each other, each committing suicide believing the other to be dead.

3. Cleopatra and Mark Antony. Intriguing, unforgettable and extremely romantic, this is a love story whose passionate appeal has not dimmed over time. Not surprisingly, William Shakespeare dramatized the story of true love in his play. Cleopatra, a breathtakingly beautiful, intelligent and powerful woman, was the last pharaoh of Egypt while Mark Antony was the Roman general who succeeded his slain friend Julius Caesar. The two fell in love immediately and the union between them turned them into a formidable ruling power, and placed Egypt in a superior position. As in all love stories, their move never went straight and the false news of Cleopatra’s death caused Antonus to impale himself on his own sword. The shattered Egyptian queen followed suit, unable to live without her lover.

4. Slim and Anarkali. The Mughals, who ruled India from 1526 to 1858, not only built one of the greatest love monuments ever – the Taj Mahal – but also produced some unforgettable love stories. Among them, the most popular story was that of the handsome Prince Salim (the uncrowned Emperor Jahangir) and the beautiful courtesan Anarkali, the court dancer of his father’s palace. Their love story is the stuff of fairy tales – an unlikely alliance, insurmountable social barriers and parental opposition. And the final, heartbreaking ending, when Anarkali is walled in by life, even as the imprisoned Salim looks on helplessly.

5. Tristan and Isolde. Isolde, daughter of the King of Ireland was engaged to marry King Mark of Cornwall. King Mark sent his nephew Tristan to Ireland to accompany his bride-to-be to Cornwall. However, fate planned otherwise. Both Tristan and Isolde fell passionately in love with each other. However, Isolt went on to marry King Mark but never stopped loving Tristan. King Mark learned of this affair and banished Tristan from Cornwall. Heartbroken Tristan traveled to Brittany where he met Isol of Brittany. He eventually marries her but never consummates the union. Finally, due to a lie on Isol’s part, Tristan dies of grief. The shattered Isolde dies soon after.

6. Odysseus and Penelope. It is a Greek love story marked by unimaginable devotion and sacrifice. Shortly after his marriage to Penelope, Odysseus leaves for battle and is separated from her for the next twenty years. But each patiently waits for the return of the other. During these long years of separation, Penelope steadfastly refuses no less than 108 eager suitors even though she has little hope of her beloved husband’s return. Odysseus, for his part, heroically rejects the advances of a beautiful witch just so he can return to his wife and son.

7. Heloise and Abelard. The love story that became famous in the world at the beginning of the 12th century celebrates the passion between a monk and a nun. Peter Abler was a philosopher par excellence in Paris, who was invited by the canon of Notre Dame, Pulver, to tutor his niece, Heloise, a serious girl. Abler and Louise fell madly in love, and a child was born as a result of this secret affair. When the canon got caught up in their love affair, Abler decided to send Heloise to a convent to avoid her aunt’s wrath. However, the uncle was convinced that Abelard was simply amusing himself with his niece and therefore castrated him while the latter slept. Deprived of his manhood, Abeler became a monk for the rest of his life, but continued to love Heloise. Heartbroken, Heloise became a nun at the same convent. However, the incredibly touching love letters the two exchanged later found their way into print and inspired true lovers all over the country.

8. Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. Another Mughal love story that continues to this day is the story between the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. After Mumtaz’s death in 1629, the heartbroken emperor decided to build a fitting monument to the love of his life – the magnificent Taj Mahal, recognized as the greatest monument of love. It is also among the New Seven Wonders of the World. Construction on this white marble monument took twenty long years, employing 20,000 workers and 1,000 elephants. Shah Jahan was overthrown by his own son, Aurangzeb, and imprisoned in the Red Fort of Agra. He spent his long and lonely years, standing and staring across the Jamuna River at the bright white monument of his beloved queen. Eventually, Shah Jahan was buried beside her in the Taj Mahal. Lovers try to watch the Taj Mahal on a full moon night – it is an unforgettable sight.

9. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This is an amazing love story in which an English royal mourned the death of her husband – the only man she loved – for 40 long years. Victoria ascended the throne of England in 1837 and married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 1840. Victoria, deeply devoted to her husband, was devastated when Albert died in 1861. The grieving queen refrained from all public appearances for three years. Even after she returned to public life, she never stopped mourning her beloved husband, and continued to wear black until her death in 1901. Under her reign, the longest in English history, Britain became a world power on which “the sun never set.”

10. Orpheus and Eurydice. In this ancient Greek love story, Orpheus fell madly in love with Eurydice, a beautiful nymph, and married her. Overshadowing this happy couple was Aristeus, the Greek god of land and agriculture, who also had his eye on Eurydice. One day, while trying to escape the amorous pursuit of Aristaeus, Eurydice accidentally stumbled right into a den of snakes and was fatally bitten on the legs. The confused Orpheus played and sang mournful songs that finally moved the gods and nymphs to return his lost love to him. However, like most love stories, this one too did not have a happy ending. And he lost Eurydice for the second time, but this time forever.

have you noticed None of the love stories really had a ‘happy ending’. They all ended with one, or both, lovers dying at the end, usually due to a huge misunderstanding. I wonder if everyone had ‘lived happily ever after’ would we feel the same sense of poignancy we do now? We will never know!
