How to Be Elegant

Secrets of self-confidence, stability and grace

“To be elegant is first of all to know oneself, and to know oneself well requires a certain amount of reflection and intelligence.”

There are two parts to being elegant.

The following article talks about inner and outer elegance, starting with inner elegance because I believe true elegance starts from within.

Everyone knows someone we think is elegant.

She could be a celebrity. That girl who seems to have it all together. The one with all the designer clothes and bags. The soft spoken girl who speaks eloquently.

She can be whoever you want to be.

We express this hope in many ways. We buy the most beautiful things, dress our best and wear luxury designer products. Does that mean we are elegant? Not necessarily so.

I’ve been trying to define the elegant woman for as long as I can remember. Dictionary.com defines an elegant woman as one who is exquisitely graceful and stylish in appearance and manner.

She is so much more.

For me, that woman is (but not only), Audrey Hepburn. She moves gracefully, never sloppy, never tired, always bright and shiny and yet pleasantly quiet, thoughtful. She is full of love, kindness and compassion. She’s always on time, works hard at whatever she can do, whether it’s arriving on set with all her lines memorized or giving a moving speech to thousands with her work at UNICEF.

Despite her influential life, her heart and values were always with her family. She also enjoys fashion and good clothes, but they have never been a priority over the feelings of others. She preferred a quiet life but worked hard and saved to provide a comfortable and normal life for her children. When she felt she had had enough, she stopped working and relished her role as a full-time mother, only flying to an interview and flying the very next day to return to her home in Switzerland.

Her very elegant essence could not even escape the character she portrayed in the movies.

In Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the character Holly Golightly was a social climber, often using men and sometimes compromising her virtue for money and connections. However, when Audrey played the role, she took it to a realm where it made her audience believe that she was just a lost, silly and innocent and very lost country farm girl, like a dove and made everyone feel compassion for her character.

She made Holly Golightly a more tasteful character. I was determined to discover the essence of elegance from the wonderful Audrey Hepburn. In my research, I kept asking, what was “it” that made her this way?

I may have read every book and document about her. who was she how was she In reality, I encountered a woman with flaws, insecurities and yet I had a resolve made of steel to stay true to herself. Her unwillingness to fake anything, from her lack of self-confidence in body image and a publicly failed marriage. She struggled with her own relationships and marriage before anyone else. Yet she always remained strong and positive and kind whenever she could. She focused on others and that became more apparent as she neared the end of her life. Whether she was happy and satisfied with what she did or not, no one really knows. She probably has no idea how much she influenced and inspired all of us, to this very day.

Even so, she was the most elegant.

I think Audrey Hepburn embodies the essence of elegance. Google “elegant woman” and it comes up first. Look up any other poll for “most elegant woman” and you’ll see 40% of people voted Audrey Hepburn.

She was loved and no one had a nasty thing to say about her.

So how do you achieve similar refinement?

Wouldn’t it be great if someone told us, “Here are the seven steps to becoming elegant!”

As much as most ‘authorities’ have a common theme, there is a stylistic element that is completely individual.

The point is, take anything written whether on this site or not in your judgment, mix it with your own thoughts and establish your own style.

Refinement is a lifelong process. As long as you really want to improve, I believe you naturally improve. Of course knowledge speeds up the process!

First steps to elegance

My response has two parts. We also start from the heart. I believe, true to what the Bible says in Matthew 23:26 that we must start from the inside and once that is taken care of, the rest becomes easy.

Despite what all the dictionaries say, I would like to define elegance as grace in action.

I’ve seen friends try to be elegant by wearing pearl necklaces around their necks, climb socially, become foodies, talk Prada among a hundred things.

There is nothing wrong with that. While this is all personal preference, one isn’t really elegant that way. She may look elegant, knows all the language, but she is far from elegant once she is in certain situations.

There is a saying that goes “A woman is like a tea bag. You don’t know her strength until you put her in hot water.”

An elegant woman is a kind woman. She is kind to the end. She never pushes others in her way on a crowded train. It doesn’t matter if she looks elegant, talks the part but fails miserably in her everyday life. The truth eventually finds its way out.

The way to be kind? Love others, value and appreciate others. There is the mindset of every person you meet, regardless of social status, appearance, speech, education, etc. “I am you and you are me.” You really care and put others first. Talk about them and let them talk about them.

As Audrey Hepburn said, that as a child, her mother told her that “you” were boring.’

Second part of elegance

One of the roots of the definition of “elegant” is authenticity.

Many women have secret struggles with self-confidence and self-esteem. There are many roots to this issue which are too long to discuss. While I’m not a psychologist, I think it’s best to keep it simple.

I believe that having confidence has a lot to do with authenticity. It’s a matter of discovering who you are, what God has given you in terms of talents, skills and ambitions, dreams and what you have.

In other words, Take stock of yourself.

– Take some time to discover your likes and dislikes.

– What are your strengths, talents, dreams? God put them there for a reason.

– What are you thinking about all the time? This is your passion.

– What do you have in your hand? what can you do? Appreciate the opportunities around you.

As we work on these questions and embark on a journey of continuous discovery, we may uncover them and at the same time handicap infections. We naturally embark on a journey to hone ourselves to our full potential.

Walla! You don’t have time for low self-confidence. You suddenly realize that you know a lot about something – your passion – you speak with pride and self-respect.

To be true to ourselves is to be be authentic. We become comfortable in our own skin. We can stop being self-conscious and focus on others. This is the root of an elegant and graceful woman. Elegant hairstyles, elegant hair, evening hair, how to be elegant, elegant look

the rest (external part of elegance)

The rest involves changing what you already know.

  • Take pride in your appearance.
  • Manners (not the same as manners).
  • Knowing basic manners.
  • Be aware of cultural differences.
  • Basics of social ease.
  • In awe of beauty

Elegance is much easier to fake and ‘turn it on and off’ whenever you want. However, if it’s the highest form of elegance you want, which includes the various definitions in dictionaries, it should start with the heart.
