Offside at Park-Circus Maidaan, Calcutta

Soccer games in the circus maidan park are a common sight. The field has six pitches, most of which are occupied on summer evenings by local teams made up of college players. Passers-by tend to linger for a while, to express support for one group or another. Those interested in following the game full squat on the grass around the periphery of the field, inching into the playing area as the game progresses. They are so close to the action that they are almost a part of it. It’s like watching a show where your seat is next to the stage and on the same level as it. However, unlike the theater, you have to be constantly alert, lest a bullet hit you.

That evening was no different. The Anglo Indian Park Union team played in red shirts and the bandhos in blue. All attention seemed to be riveted on them. Other teams, playing without proper uniforms, looked ragged in comparison. Most of the Bengali-speaking viewers were supporters of Desh Bandhu. This cheered the group to no end. A remarkable sight that evening was the presence of quite a number of enthusiastic Anglo-Indian girls among the spectators.

Desh Bandhu was ably led by Dilip Dada (Elder Brother), as he was called. 18 year old Dileep was a big brother. Hooligan and bully, everyone was afraid of him. When the whistle blew, he took control of the ball. Playing center forward with nimble footwork, he dribbled well. Moving deftly between his opponents, he held onto the ball for almost a minute before passing it to his left, which he managed to take control of after a few hiccups. The left in was a fast runner; He took charge and advanced towards the D. The opponents put up good resistance as they looked the better team. Dilip was desperately waiting for a pass but it was almost a lost cause until he got one. It took a huge effort from him to dive head first to score this goal. The crowd burst into chants of ‘Dada, Dada’.

An Anglo-Indian lady flashed Dilip a beaming smile. ‘What a beauty!’ Dilip thought as their eyes met before a young looking girl whispered something in her ear. He remembered the young-looking girl who stood by their goalpost with her friends, while the Desh Bandhu players changed for the match. Being a makeshift football pitch, there were no changing rooms on the ground. The actors did not take this intrusion and Dileep, who was checked by the girls, did something drastic. As if by accident, he took off his football shorts to reveal something scandalous about them. They immediately shot, much to the amusement of Dileep’s teammates who laughed heartily, ‘Dada, ki chomotkaar’.

The tables turned on Desh Bandhoo as the match progressed. Park Union were now able to penetrate the defense and score without much effort. The Anglo-Indian girls proved a great distraction in their miniskirts, playing cheerleaders whenever Union Park scored a goal. The footwork and lustful cries of the spectators ensured that Dileep and his friends could hardly concentrate on their game. It seemed to be a losing cause.

What happened next was not in the spirit of the game. A major controversy erupted when the referee mistakenly ruled offside. Supporters from both sides invaded the pitch and beat the referee before attacking the players. The game degenerated into a fight between the two sides and their supporters. Given the sheer number of supporters, Dash Bandhus held the upper hand. The situation was indeed dire for the Anglo-Indian women; Their safety was in doubt. Sensing the danger, Dilip turned towards the Anglo-Indian lady who was smiling at him, placed her on his broad shoulders and ran to the safety of a building across the road. The wail of police sirens drowned out her screams.

Dilip rushed to the balcony on the first floor of the building. He put the lady down, but took her hand in a firm grip, only to be stung by a tight slap on his left cheek. It shook him. He was about to respond when the lady screamed, ‘You want to rape me, you scoundrel.’ ‘Why did you bring me here?’ She screamed again. Dilip didn’t know what to say, he just tried to calm her down but she squirmed from his grip. He was mesmerized by her looks and started moving towards her. ‘Get away from me,’ she screamed and he stopped dead in his tracks. She is a strong woman, he thought. ‘I’m sorry’ he said. Composing herself, she looked down at the scene below and exclaimed, ‘Oh my God!’

By now the police had taken over and were busy rounding up the rioters and the girls. Dilip saw her worry. He wanted to reassure her, but equally, he longed to take her in his arms. “Don’t you dare touch me,” she exploded like a lioness, “I’m old enough to be your mother.” He was shocked in disbelief. He noticed her looking at the girls who were handcuffed and led to the police car. She looked at Dilip sternly and again looked helplessly at the scene below. ‘I’m their teacher and look what I’ve done,’ she said and broke down. Dilip was shocked. He is dying to make amends and struggles to think of a way to help her out of this mess. ‘It is not wise for me to go down now, I will be arrested too. How will that help?’ she said. ‘I will, whatever you do…you…’ Dilip started stuttering, his desire to be in her arms increased tenfold. Dileep saw her look of disgust as she told him ‘You have such a dirty mind, you stripped me on purpose in front of my students’.

‘I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to, it was just a reflex action in the heat of the moment. I will do whatever you say now,’ said Dilip. ‘Let’s go to the police station to rescue them’ she commanded. Dileep springs into action. He runs downstairs and she follows him. He hailed a rickshaw and they quickly headed towards the police station.

Emily and Dada’s minds raced as the rickshaw sped to the police station. His target was cut to a car; The passengers were not sure of themselves.
