South Africa – The Jewel of Africa
No other country has been more central to the changing tides of modern history than South Africa since apartheid ended in the early 1990s. Now it feels incredible that such a thing existed not so long ago, although it is fair to say that it has not just been in operation since the founding of the new Republic of South Africa, it is also fair to say that the country has shown a maturity and willingness to move forward that has exceeded expectations. Much praise for this must of course go to Nelson Mandela, who, even when he left his position as president in 1999, remained a figurehead for positive and peaceful progress.
So now the great man has retired from public service, what can we expect for visiting tourists and those thinking of investing in modern South Africa?
South Africa has always been known as the ‘Jewel of Africa’. In a continent known for its abundant wildlife and stunning scenery, this is no easy title to hold. However, the fact that South Africa offers so much makes it so popular. The country has a world-class infrastructure with modern highways, trains, buses and internal flights that allow easy mobility. South Africa is also known for having more than 3,500 kilometers of paradise coastline, more than 20 national parks and a variety of world heritage sites. All this, a wonderful climate and so many activities to keep even the toughest wanting to smile all day, from diving to cultural landmarks and trails, to golf, great food and wine, it’s easy to see why this country has become so popular.
There is so much to see in this great country, as the west coast, with pristine beaches and an epic mountain range, is a great destination to experience charming ancient fishing villages and South Africa’s best seafood. There is always abundant nature here, with the West Coast Spring bursting with glorious carpets of flowers covering the ground, a favorite for hiking, as well as bird watching and whale watching.
Elephant Beach extends from Lake St. Lucia, a famous World Heritage Site to the south of the Kosi Gulf. It is a beautiful wild land, an untamed area that is becoming increasingly popular with those seeking unusual geology and ecosystems, along with a taste for adventure. There are two world-famous parks here, the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park (with over 1,500 white rhinos) and the Simangaliso Water Park. In this area you will find pristine wetlands inhabited by birdlife and the largest group of native African elephants in the country.
For those looking for South Africa off the beaten track, there are many more amazing destinations worth noting. Namaqualand is known as one of the most beautiful places in the world when it transforms in spring, from a barren landscape to a sea of vibrant wildflowers.
The battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal will interest history buffs as it is home to the historic wars of the British, Boers and Zulu. Known to be home to some of the bloodiest battles, such as the Battle of Isandalwana and Rorke’s Drift, immortalized in the 1964 classic film Zulu. This is a beautiful land with a peaceful landscape.
The Drakensberg (meaning Dragon Mountain in Afrikaans) is the Wild West of South Africa. An impressive mountain range, with peaks reaching more than 3,400 meters. The mountain range forms a border between the Kingdom of Lesotho and the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Drakensberg is known for its vegetation, fishing, climbing, horse riding, water rafting, hiking and the second highest waterfall in the world, the impressive Tugela Falls, at an incredible height of 850 meters. It is a great place for vacation as many excellent holiday destinations, hotels and resorts can be found here.
For wine lovers, the Cape wine regions of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Farrell are where to go. The wonderful diversity that South Africa offers is what attracts more and more tourists every year all year round. As such, South Africa is fast becoming a major destination for buyers looking to invest.
Two- and three-bed houses can be purchased starting at €100,000 and up, depending on the location and the type of building. Detached villas can be found from a very competitive starting price, with three beds for just €120,000. If you are thinking about buying a property in South Africa it is of course recommended to do research on the process of buying the property in the country, however, foreign nationals have been investing in property in South Africa for many years and the business is well established.
Some useful buying tips to keep in mind:
• There are no restrictions on the purchase of property by foreigners in South Africa. Although there is a sophisticated land registration system that makes the freeholds a joint and the lease the less accepted concept.
• Real estate in South Africa is referred to as ‘real estate’.
• There are shipping fees to be paid. Current transfer duties are R25,000 for properties between R500,000 and R1,000,000 R25,000 + an additional 8% of the value over R1m for properties over R1,000,000.
• If you buy outside the program, it is acceptable to waive shipping fees.
• This area is all in South Africa. Making sure you are buying in a good safe place is more important than the size and style of the property and should come first in the decision process.
• Although foreign nationals can purchase real estate in South Africa, it does not automatically follow that foreign nationals can also purchase the right to extract minerals from that real estate.
• The South African government recognizes the autonomy of some tribes in certain areas. Once you’ve found the appropriate area you want to search for a property, it’s a good idea to check if the property falls under that jurisdiction, and if so, make sure your legal representation is capable, as they know about many different local versions. Necessary to ensure a successful purchase.
